How To Talk Like a Local

Monday, March 15, 2010

The Official Travel Notes Blog

Are you a dardledumdue, clemt and looking for a pub, or just interested in colourful words and phrases?

Whether you're a visitor to the United Kingdom, or a British resident, you might think you're listening to foreign languages as you travel around the island.

From Aberdeen to Warwick, dialect and regional slang plays an important part in the daily life of locals.

How to Talk Like a Local - by Susie Dent

To understand the differences in lingo, from Cockney to Geordie, and get an insight into the meanings and origins of some lesser-known sayings and phrases used in the English language, you'll need a copy of How to Talk Like a Local; compiled by Susie Dent, an English lexicographer and long-time dictionary expert on Channel 4’s game show - Countdown.

Be gallus on your travels and chamrag with the people you meet.

Are they just jannicking or deadly serious? Now you'll know.
